Jon Olsen charmed as UCLA baseball’s third starter

Jon Olsen’s path to nailing down UCLA’s Sunday starter role started on a cloudy day in Dodger Stadium. In 5 2/3 innings, he struck out nine USC batters. In the first five innings, he relinquished only one hit. Olsen arrived that day, UCLA head coach John Savage said. The sophomore from Damien High has continued to carve out a critical role for the Bruins. “We would not be close to where we are without him,” Savage said. Where the Bruins are is...

UCLA softball team drops controversial WCWS opener

The shrinking margin of error at the Women’s College World Series was quickly demonstrated to the UCLA softball team. The fifth-seeded Bruins dropped their opening game to No. 13 seed LSU on Thursday, 2-1, in a game that hinged on two close calls at the plate. UCLA pitcher Rachel Garcia was called out at home in the second inning despite appearing to beat the tag, but the more controversial call awarded LSU the winning run in the fifth inning when Bruins catcher Paige...

UCLA softball confident, calm in return to WCWS

In March, Kelly Inouye-Perez looked at her team after getting swept by Utah at home in the first series of Pac-12 play. The 11th-year head coach saw a talented team she still believed in. But she also saw one that lacked its own identity. That UCLA team’s character was still tethered to the 2016 squad that went to the Women’s College World Series, hoping to carry the momentum over. Only when the 2017 Bruins cut the cord could they fully flourish. Now as the...

UCLA’s Bryce Alford considers attention on LaVar Ball ‘an unfair thing’ for Lonzo

EL SEGUNDO >> The compliments rolled off of Bryce Alford’s tongue, as the UCLA guard reflected on playing with Lonzo Ball. Though Alford projected that Ball “will be just fine” should the Lakers draft him with their No. 2 pick, one question keeps following the Bruins’ former point guard. Will his outspoken father, LaVar Ball, put his son in a precarious position because of his outspoken nature? “It’s just an unfair thing for...

Cal State Fullerton, UCLA baseball in NCAA tournament as at-large teams

Cal State Fullerton and UCLA found out they made the NCAA baseball tournament as at-large teams Monday morning, and Long Beach State learned which three teams it will host in the regional at Blair Field. The Titans (34-21) finished third in the Big West Conference behind the champion Dirtbags and second-place Cal Poly, which did not make the tournament because of its 28-28 record and low 107 RPI. CSF will play in the Stanford regional and open against BYU (37-19) at 1 p.m. Thursday.
